Reported sightings of Tasmanian tigers in Victoria have been compared with sightings of Elvis.

Government records show there have been more than 60 reported sightings of the extinct marsupial around Victoria.

Wildlife management officer Nic Mooney says there has been no evidence of the thylacine living in the area for thousands of years.

Mr Mooney says the animals mistaken for Tasmanian tigers may actually be starving dogs or foxes.

"Mistakes can be made, particularly if you add in this problem of people trying to make a judgment over long distance, poor light, over a very short time," he said.

"I've actually seen dogs here that are starving. These are bush dogs that are lost basically and they certainly look like they could have stripes."
