'Mountain lion' plays cat and mouse with land-holders

Wednesday, 4 May 2005.

A rural lands protection board in the NSW Southern Highlands has investigated reports of giant cats living in the bush near Robertson, on the state's south coast, but so far no proof has emerged.

Land-holders say they have regularly sighted animals that look like the now extinct Queensland marsupial cat.

The Moss Vale board's managing ranger, Andrew Glover, says it has followed up on the sightings and now is waiting for hard evidence.

"Yes some land-holders in the Robertson area have seen something which could be best described as a mountain lion, or a leopard, or something like that, but we haven't been able to substantiate the claims that these cats actually exist in that area," he said.
